With this painting, Eeckhout won first prize in the genre painting competition of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, 1823; Salon van Gent, 1823, nos. 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 or 20. He exhibited anonymously in the Concours pour le Tableau de Genre, with the theme Echec et mat.
