With this painting, Van der Poorten won the first prize in the landscape painting competition of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, 1814 (Salon of Ghent, 1814, nos. 203, 204, 205, 206, 207, 208, 209, 210 or 211). He exhibited anonymously in the Concours du Paysage.
