Jules Schmalzigaug was the only Belgian artist to be closely involved in the development of Italian futurism, maintaining close ties with the protagonists of this Italian revolutionary movement. During his stay in Venice, he even became friends with some of them. He created his painting Study of colour and movement during his Dutch period, in The Hague, where he fled after World War I broke out. While this work is clearly linked to his futurist work, it marks a clear move toward abstraction.
