The engraving is part of the series Piscium vivae icones, published by Crispijn I van de Passe in Utrecht and engraved after designs by Adriaen Collaert (New Hollstein, Collaert Dynasty). Unlike the title suggests, the series contains engravings of other river and marine animals (also provided with their Latin names) in addition to depictions of fishes.
