Saint Gerard of Brogne, an early Christian hermit, was originally in the service of the Count of Namur. He chose a religious life and founded a first abbey in present-day Saint-Gérard. Gerardus, a Benedictine, is known as a reformer of religious institutions, including Saint-Baafs Abbey in Ghent, Saint-Bertinus Abbey in Saint-Omer, Saint-Vaast Abbey in Atrecht and the abbeys of Mouzon and Elnone (today Saint-Amand-les-Eaux).
