Eugène-Rose de Beauharnais (1781-1824) was the son of Alexandre and Joséphine de Beauharnais, and the stepson of Napoleon Bonaparte to whom Joséphine de Beauharnais remarried in 1796. Through his stepfather, he built a successful military and diplomatic career, became viceroy of Italy and was grand duke of Frankfurt for a time. The lithography was probably made after an 1839 portrait painting by Joseph Karl Stieler (Rueil-Malmaison collection, châteaux de Malmaison et Bois-Préau).
