René Descartes (La Haye en Touraine 1596 - Stockholm 1650) was a French-born philosopher and mathematician who lived much of his life in the Republic of the Seven United Provinces. His approach to the problem of knowledge and the nature of the human mind played an important role in the development of philosophy.
