Valentine Prax was one of the women artists working in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s. She was relatively successful and was allowed to hold a solo exhibition of her work in the Sélection gallery in Brussels as early as 1922. One of the works she exhibited was this landscape, which the art historian and collector Leo Van Puyvelde bought. The unconventional technique and the free use of colour was similar to that of her friends in Montparnasse, including Amadeo Modigliani, Chaïm Soutine and Ossip Zadkine. She married the latter in the summer of 1920.
