Although The Shoemaker stands alone in George Minne's oeuvre, it fits in with the typical 19th-century interest in craftsmanlike indoor scenes. There is a similarity to a painting by Ferdinand Hodler from 1883 (Zurich, Kunsthaus) with almost identical elements.
