In his debut years, Leon De Smet, Gustave's younger brother, underwent the influence of Emile Claus. He tried to capture the vibrant light in Claus' panoramic landscapes in an early work like Landscape at Latem. It is one of the first landscapes the artist painted in and around Sint-Martens-Latem. The emphasis here is not so much on a recognisable rendering of reality, but on the atmospheric influence of light. A muted, golden sun glow enhances the melancholic atmosphere of the canvas. This painting is one of the first landscape views De Smet made in and around the rural village of Sint-Martens-Latem.
