Like all surrealists, Max Ernst uses accidental elements. In doing so, he employs techniques such as calquering, stamping, scratching away and rubbing. Vegetation is one of the first examples. The organic, playfully applied paint matter contrasts with the partly tight, partly loose graphism of the incised lines. The suggestive effect of the image and the great freedom of execution give the panel its expressive power. In Belgium, Frits Van den Berghe in particular is influenced by Ernst's way of working.
