Ensor's self-portraits run like a thread through his entire oeuvre. The artist made over sixty painted, drawn and printed self-portraits. In addition, he incorporated his self-portrait in numerous other compositions. The etching Self-portrait (by the lamp) is inspired by the drawing of the same name in black chalk from 1886 (Brussels, Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium). As in the drawing, Ensor also incorporated elements of his interior in the etching, such as a table lamp, the candlestick, a fragment of the mirror, a wainscot, etc. The same theme of the portrait emerging from the background like a dream image is also present in the drawings Self-portrait with sketchbook from 1885-86 (Ostend, Mu.ZEE) and My Portrait from 1886 (private collection).
