In 1887 and 1888 James Ensor etched some harbour views in Nieuwpoort, but mainly near the harbour channel in Ostend. With the exception of the print "The baths of Ostend" Ensor did not paint any other beach scenes in those years. The "Beach of De Panne", created in 1904, is the only known pure beach scene in etching by his hand.
