Ensor repeatedly took the seamy side of society as the subject of paintings, drawings and etchings. In the etching "The Old ... Rascals" he openly pokes fun at the hypocrisy of contemporary bourgeois morality. Ensor's views on the old 'rascals' are also evident from the various titles he gave to the etching: Les vieux cochons, La visite des médecins and Les membres du corps académique en quête de beauté moderne. Ensor must have been familiar with the world of prostitution: he spent his youth in the area of Kleine Weststraat, Ostend's red light district.
