After a career as a lawyer at the Brussels Bar, Hector Denis became a professor at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He also taught at the Girls' Normal School. Denis taught philosophy, law and economic policy, among other subjects. At the Brussels university, he was a colleague of Ensor's bosom friend Ernest Rousseau.
