The etching "Christ Calming the Storm" is closely related in theme and style to the series "The Aureoles of Christ", also created around 1885-1886. In 1891 Ensor reworked the same theme in oil (Ostend, Mu.ZEE, inv. 1975/711). In the painting, and perhaps also for the etching, William Turner's perception of the landscape served as a model. Working in drypoint, the first state of the etching possesses pictorial effects, an effect that is further enhanced by the intense lighting effects.
