The etching "The Assasination" was probably inspired by an article and illustration from the magazine Le Journal Illustré of 27 May 1888. Ensor turned the lurid depiction of the illustration in the magazine, in which two men saw through a dead man's arm with a handsaw and his blood seeps into a bucket, into a lurid yet burlesque parody.
