The print "King Plague" is based on a story by Edgar Allen Poe, entitled "King Plague, a tale containing an allegory". The story is about two sailors who leave an inn without paying and are thereby pursued by the evil innkeeper. During their flight, they end up in a London neighbourhood where they find themselves in a cellar, where King Plague is presiding over an assembly. The etching is based on Ensor's drawing of the same name, created around 1886-1888 (inv. 2002-D).
