Together with Otto Dix, George Grosz was the most important representative of the Neue Sachlichkeit. Grosz is especially known for his merciless analysis of human smallness and cruelty. However, the drawing Heroic Thoughts is characteristic of the artist's early drawing work. Grosz used extremely simple and broken lines. Compositionally, the pictorial elements flow from one another. The style is adapted to the artist's lively train of thought. It is a fantasy that lacks Grosz's later wry undertone.
