After the fall of Antwerp, Gilles III van Coninxloo was forced to leave the city of his birth in 1585. He fled to Frankenthal via Zeeland, where other landscape painters were working. Later, he settled in Amsterdam, where he was already regarded as an innovator in his own lifetime. He exchanged the three-tonal composition (brown, green and blue) for more complex schemes based on carefully thought-out contrasts between light and shade. With fluid brushstrokes, he painted woodland scenes with exceptional light effects, many of which have a romantic and, at times, even a fantastic character. Jerome is one of the most frequently depicted saints in Flemish art. His reclusive existence and introspective attitude inspired many artists, but his discrete presence in the landscape also made him a favourite subject of the earliest landscape painters.
