In Expressionism, the woodcut is as important a means of expression as painting and sculpture. The technique forces the artist to a powerful drawing without sensitive nuances, to essential contrasts without colour shading. A number of artists, such as Jozef Cantré (1890-1957), Gustave de Smet (1877-1943) and Frits van den Berghe (1883-1939) prefer linoleum, a material that is easier to work with. Their designs are strongly influenced by German Expressionism. Only about ten linocuts by Frits van den Berghe are known. The wood- and linocuts by Gustave de Smet, nineteen in all, are mostly based on his own paintings.
