Early in his career, Ghent painter Edgar Bytebier was influenced by Albert Baertsoen. Around 1900, Baertsoen was the quintessential painter of Ghent cityscapes. The kinship with Baertsoen's melancholic canal views is evident in Bytebier's predilection for 'banal', not very picturesque city corners, the sought-after perspective, the attention to reflection and the sketchy representation of bank elements in the water, the subdued colour and the use of only a few light sources that give the whole a fairy-like atmosphere.
