Théo Van Rysselberghe produced his best work as a portraitist. This talent is already evident in this early work, painted around 1880, at the age of eighteen. The artist creates a mysterious atmosphere by depicting himself with his headgear pulled far over his head, so that the shadow of the brim obscures his gaze. All the attention goes to the youthful cheeks, the strong-willed nose and chin and the sensual mouth with the pipe. Here we already see something of the dandy we know from his letters and later self-portraits.
