E.L.T. Mesens was a versatile artist who is best known as a publisher and organiser of exhibitions on surrealist art. He had a predilection for collages, which he created in a figurative or geometric abstract style. He used various elements from nature, the human figure, the written word or from the world of music as in Evidence poétique. In fact, Mesens was a composer before he began experimenting with visual art. His free style and playful humour give his work a freshness and directness that are reminiscent of Dadaism, which immediately preceded Surrealism.
