Théo Van Rysselberghe took evening classes at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Ghent for two years, from 1878 until 1880. He had registered as a draughtsman and attended various studios. During the 1878–1879 academic year the young artist studied with Théodore Canneel (antique model) and with Joseph Morel (Anatomy). In 1879–1880 he registered for the ‘Life’ classes with Canneel and for ‘Anatomy’ with Morel and attended two instructed classes, ‘Architecture’ and ‘Perspective’ which were both taught by Joseph De Waele. As a young academy student Van Rysselberghe was given the opportunity to work in the Museum of Fine Arts. At the time the museum’s collection was preserved in the buildings of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Van Rysselberghe painted this copy of a still-life by the Dutch artist, Gerardina Jacoba van de Sande Bakhuyzen. The work is dated 1880 meaning Van Rysselberghe probably painted it shortly before he moved to Brussels.
