In May 1913, Gustave Van de Woestyne travelled to Florence with Valerius De Saedeleer, where he gazed in wonder at the work of Botticelli and Fra Angelico. Both the subdued colours and the girl’s almost ethereal beauty remind us of the work of these Italian masters. We can also see the influence of Symbolism, especially the mystically inspired work of Maurice Denis and Jan Toorop, in the idealisation of this simple village girl, the sensitive lines and the decorative pattern on her blouse.
