As a consequence of the photographic accuracy with which he portrayed his models, Gustave Van de Woestyne was much in demand as a portraitist. Here we see Roos Van Wijnendaele, the artist Edgar Gevaert’s grandmother on his mother’s side. At the time Van de Woestyne did the portrait she was almost 100 years old. It is striking in most of his portraits, and here too, that the face and hands are rendered with great precision while the clothing is less detailed. The pale and empty background against which the figure is shown was also something the artist used regularly.
