This print is one of a series of prints in a special edition that contains a total of ten of the fourteen etchings Hogarth made to illustrate John Beaver's book Roman Military Punishments. This special edition also includes two etchings that were intended for a never-published study of Beaver's Modern Military Punishments. The content and form of Hogarth's prints are inspired by Jacques Callot's series Les misères de la guerre.
