Edgard Tytgat portrayed several children, though their names are not known. Nor do we know who the model for this girl in The Last Doll was. She has a melancholy air, and of course the ‘last doll’ signifies a farewell to childhood. The unaffected simplicity and purity of children beguiled Tytgat. We also see this simplicity and a certain awkwardness in his way of painting and drawing, which has some affinity with popular illustrations and children’s drawings. Although in about 1924 Tytgat was admitted to the circle of Flemish expressionists associated with the magazine Sélection, he retained this characteristically rather naive style of drawing and painting.
