The Jesuit Daniel Seghers (1590-1661) from Antwerp specialised in painting flower arrangements. He was a pupil of Jan Brueghel the Elder, himself a renowned painter of flowers and the inventor of the floral wreath around a stone cartouche. In the cartouche, we often see an image of saints, usually executed by other painters. Seghers further elaborates this motif. The floral garlands are often composed of several bouquets of mainly mary flowers, put together regardless of their time of flowering. Seghers' oeuvre is characterised by careful observation, delicate brushwork and refined colour harmonies.
