Gustave De Smet painted several portraits of himself together with his wife. In 1927 the couple still lived in Deurle, a village on the River Lys. Here the low tower of the Romanesque church in Deurle is also recognisable in the schematic portrayal of the landscape. The scene is constructed as a puzzle of coloured geometrical shapes and concrete elements such as the figures themselves and the stylised vase of flowers. This approach is typical of De Smet’s work between 1926 and 1928. The artist often created several versions of the same subject. He also painted a version of this portrait in oils.
