From the end of the 1920s, Gustave De Smet gradually abandoned the severe formal idiom he had so far used in favour of a more realistic approach to his subjects. After a short period in which he took his inspiration more from themes of the urban environment, he once again found his subjects in the life of the countryside. In this period, De Smet once again took up the subject of the woman daydreaming, which continued to recur in his oeuvre, in several intimist works painted in largely warm, red-brown tints. Nude with Necklace is a good example of this late work. There are two somewhat different versions, both of which refer back to an early work from 1916.
