The river Lys is a recurrent theme in the oeuvre of Valerius De Saedeleer. The artist had already settled in Sint-Martens-Latem along the Lys in 1898 and it is there that he would develop his personal style: compositions built up in large colour sections with here and there a fine detail, a plain manner of painting and a sparse use of paint. As is often the case, De Saedeleer applies a format in width here, which enables him to emphasise the vastness of the landscape. Far away against the bright horizon, in the bend of the slowly flowing river, the village Sint-Martens-Latem is reflected in the water. The work not only radiates a meditative seriousness, but the composition in the width and the viewpoint from which De Saedeleer painted his subject also give it a great monumental peace.
