In The Artist’s Studio, Edgard Tytgat portrayed his wife Maria and the sculptor Charles Leplae. They both have the light behind them, so their individual features cannot be seen. Although these two figures are placed in the middle, the painting actually focuses on the studio itself. The window plays a leading part. From this window Tytgat observed the world around him. A great many artists have painted their studio, but this view is notable, among other things, for the absence of an easel. It looks more like a study and also as a sort of lookout post, from where he viewed the small world that repeatedly inspired him.
