The portrayed Maurice De Weert was a lawyer and alderman of the city of Ghent. As a political director, he was associated with the daily newspaper La Flandre Libérale. He was chairman of the commission of the Ghent academy. The artist Anna Cogen, a pupil of Emile Claus, was his wife and biographer.
