After the First World War, Constant Permeke first settled in Ostend and then, from 1923, in Jabbeke, a village between Ostend and Bruges. In addition to figures and village scenes, Permeke painted numerous landscapes and marines, dominated by the grandeur of nature. The initial influence of French Cubism gradually disappeared from his work and made way for a free and easy manner of painting and heavy masses of paint. The village beneath the compactly clouded sky is captured in just a few quick strokes. In this picture Permeke depicts a crossbow competition, a popular pastime which he himself enjoyed.
