Valentin de Zubiaurre and his brother Ramon are considered the prime painters of Basque folk culture. Their subjects were the ordinary people and their festivities, processions, solemn church services and everyday activities. The Zubiaurre style is characterised by an almost naive realism, the dominance of blue and the clear outlines of the individual areas of colour. Their compositions, comprising successive settings, are reminiscent of the work of Peter Bruegel the Elder.
