This 'Child's Head' is an early example of Gustave De Smet’s evolution towards Expressionism. The impressionistic atmosphere of his prewar work was replaced by a strong and schematic composition and the use of more vivid colours. During his stay in the Netherlands, De Smet regularly portrayed the people around him, such as farmers, fishermen and neighbourhood children. A second portrait of this little boy, painted around 1919, is currently owned by a private collector.
