Jacques Fouquier, a painter from Antwerp, moved to Paris in 1621. His landscapes in particular were very successful. To give one example, Louis XIII commissioned him to paint a series of landscapes with views of various French cities. Panoramic View of Avignon is dominated by a monumental tree in the foreground. On the right we see a tavern and several well-dressed people. The bright red of the country woman’s dress contrasts with the blue-green panoramic landscape in the background in which the city of Avignon is illuminated. The artist manages to combine an anecdotal scene with a poetic dream landscape. The tondo shape is unique in Fouquier’s oeuvre.
