From his attic studio on the corner of the Vlaanderenstraat and the Van Iseghemlaan in Ostend, Ensor had a good view of the city. He recorded daily life on the street in a large number of panoramic black chalk drawings, sometimes heightened with watercolour and pastel. Ensor always combined different fragments on one sheet. This sheet comes from a sketchbook.
