Woman in White is an early piece by the Dutch artist Jan Toorop. The painting is closely associated with the bourgeois salons of James Ensor and Fernand Khnopff of the same period, particularly because of the intimate, hushed character of the scene and the heavily applied paint layers in refined shades and areas of pure colour. A lady is sitting at the centre, daydreaming. It is probably Annie Hall, Toorop’s future wife. Behind her, a child is sitting on the ground with its doll lying on the chair in front. The white in the woman’s dress and in the window light up the sombre, almost suffocating, interior.
