Edgard Tytgat often used his surroundings as the subject for his paintings. These commonly included interiors and street scenes, and also panoramic views of towns and villages. In 1924 he settled in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert near Brussels. This painting shows the house opposite his own. Tytgat never entered fully into Expressionism. He stuck to his poetic, rather naive-looking style, sometimes, as here, with reminders of his prewar fauvist period.
