Before the First World War, Ramah, pseudonym of Henri Raemacker (1887-1947), belonged to the circle of Brabant Fauvists around Rik Wouters. From 1916 onwards, however, the problem of form preoccupies him so much that he gives up colour for a more constructivist approach. He is more and more concerned with the arrangement of space, which he builds up in broad geometrical planes. In this respect, he is related to Jean Brusselmans. Although he cannot be counted among the group of Flemish expressionists, Ramah does get access to 'their' galleries in Brussels; for instance, he repeatedly exhibited in the gallery Le Centaure in Brussels.
