Before the First World War, Ramah, whose full name was Henri Raemaecker, painted in a late-impressionist style and soon joined the group called the Brabant Fauvists. The main influence on this group was the French painter Paul Cézanne. This influence can still be clearly seen in a work such as this 1923 Harvest in Flanders. Ramah created a synthetic image of a summer day in the countryside using an almost geometric division of the painted area, a schematic design and a warm and harmonious range of colours.
