The French artist Albert Marquet painted numerous river and harbour views. In the summer of 1920, he visited La Rochelle on the Atlantic Ocean. He depicted the port of the picturesque town from various angles with a few sharp brushstrokes. In the painting, we see the bay with the Quai Duperré in the foreground. A few barrels and packages seem to have just been unloaded or are waiting to be loaded onto a moored ship. In the background, behind the harbour, is the city with the medieval tower rising above the roofs. Striking, within the subdued and sober palette, are the subtle colour contrasts that enliven the painting.
