According to a note in the curator Fritz Van Loo's handwriting, the canvas was painted in preparation for a commemorative painting on the occasion of the marriage of Mr de Gellinck de Walle to Miss de Hemptinne, and a series of preparatory pencil sketches (inv. 1922-AG-a to 1922-AG-e) also exist of the painting.
