On the occasion of the closing of the World Exhibition in Paris on 3 November 1867, various artists engraved reward medals. The majority were made by Ponscarme. They all bore the effigy of Napoleon III on the obverse. This reward medal was dedicated to Mr Duhayon-Brunfaut, who as Kapellmeister had taken care of the musical performances during the exhibition. This medal probably ended up in a Ghent collection because the laureate's son, Auguste Duhayon, settled in Ghent, where he was a city councillor between 1870 and 1895.
