The subject of this painting is rather unusual for Charles-François Daubigny. In fact, he was a modern landscape painter who avoided tourist spots. Although the subject of the pool has an historical element, Daubigny preferred to work on the spot and focus on the whole rather than on architectural and sculptural details. The result is a beautifully executed impression. Sketches like this were regarded by colleagues as extremely modern and explain Daubigny’s influence on the development of French Impressionism.
