In the 17th century, the Marian cult reached a peak in the Roman Catholic Church. Artists in Flanders received numerous commissions for the interior decoration of churches and monasteries, which had been ravaged by the outbreak of iconoclasm (1566). The Northern Netherlands, on the other hand, was a predominantly Protestant country, and depictions of religious subjects were excluded from Protestant churches. Catholicism was, however, tolerated. Roman Catholics came together in secret churches in order to worship. The Haarlem painter Pieter Fransz. de Grebber was a Catholic and often produced paintings for such clandestine churches.
