While the style and manner of painting this work is similar to other portraits by Ketel, it is attributed to him with some reservation. The posture of the man, who turns to the right and leans backwards, is very typical. His short hair is combed back and he sports a thin moustache; he is also wearing a wide, fairly low-lying ruff, which was in fashion around 1600.
